What are the RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability features of SUN Fire T2000 Server?

The Sun fire T2000 is with the out-of-the-ordinary UltraSPARC T1 CPU. 16 DIMM slots support up to 32Gbytes of DDR2-533 memory. Internally, there is room for 4 SAS 73GB, 2.5″ disks. These server grade disks are fast 10.000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives. With SAS, the user can also use SATA disks but probably limited to 7200 RPM disks.

Reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) are aspects of a system’s design that affect its ability to operate continuously and to minimize the time necessary to service the system. Reliability is a system’s ability to operate continuously without failures and to maintain data integrity. System availability is the ability of a system to recover to an operational state after a failure, with minimal impact. Serviceability is the time it takes to restore a system to service following a system failure. These three features provided for continuous system operation.

The following features provide the high levels of reliability, availability, and serviceability to the SPARC Enterprise T2000 server.
Two Redundant, hot-swappable power supplies: This enables the system to continue operating should one of the power supplies fail or if one power source fails.
The SPARC Enterprise T2000 server also has a single hot-swappable blower unit that works in conjunction with the power supply fans to provide cooling for the internal disk drives.

Hot-swappable components: Hot-swap technology significantly increases the system’s serviceability and availability by providing the ability to replace hard drives, fan units, and power supplies without service disruption. SPARC Enterprise T2000 server hardware is designed to support hot-swapping of the chassis-mounted hard drives, fan units, and power supplies. By using the proper software commands, you can install or remove these components while the system is running.

The SPARC Enterprise T2000 server features three hot-swappable system fans. The fans make the system to continue operating with adequate cooling in the event that one of the fans fails.
The SUN Enterprise T2000 Servers server features an environmental monitoring subsystem protects the server. It protects against extreme temperatures, lack of adequate airflow through the system, power supply failures, and  Hardware faults.

Temperature sensors are located throughout the system to monitor the ambient temperature of the system and internal components. If the temperature observed by a sensor falls below a low-temperature threshold or rises above a high-temperature threshold, the monitoring subsystem software lights the amber Service Required LEDs on the front and back panel. If the temperature condition persists and reaches a critical threshold, the system initiates a system shutdown. If there is a failure of the system controller, backup sensors protect the system from serious damage, by initiating a forced hardware shutdown.
If a power supply problem is detected, an error message is logged in the ALOM CMT event log and optionally sent to the SC system console. Additionally, LEDs located on each power supply light to indicate failures.

The user can set up a hardware RAID 1 (mirroring) and hardware RAID 0 (striping) configurations for any pair of internal hard drives, providing a high-performance solution for hard drive mirroring.
By attaching one or more external storage devices to the SPARC Enterprise T2000 server, the user can use a redundant array of independent drives (RAID) software application such as Solstice DiskSuite™ or VERITAS Volume Manager to configure system drive storage in a variety of different RAID levels.
The UltraSPARC T1 multicore processor provides parity protection on its internal cache memories, including tag parity and data parity on the D-cache and I-cache. The internal 3MB L2 cache has parity protection on the tags and ECC protection on the data.

The Solaris 10 OS architecture provides a means for building and deploying systems and services capable of predictive self-healing. Self-healing technology enables systems to accurately predict component failures and mitigate many serious problems before they actually occur. This technology is incorporated into both the hardware and software of the SPARC Enterprise T2000 server.
These capabilities, along with UltraSPARC processor-based server binary compatibility, provide customers with unmatched agility, efficiency, and investment protection.

The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 server is also the industry’s most open platform, built on open-source technologies and open standards, packaging the only mainstream processor and virtualization hypervisor offered under the GPL, and having a choice of open-source operating systems and preinstalled Sun Java™ Enterprise System middleware.

The Solaris™ Operating System is free, open, and the only open-source UNIX®-based OS to run on more than 900 platforms on multiple x86 and SPARC® processors. The user can maximize the investment in the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 server by leveraging the SunSM Eco Services Suite to optimize the datacenter power, space, and cool, or Sun Consolidation and Virtualization Services to help in architect and deploy the consolidation and virtualization projects.

The SPARC Enterprise T5120  is a 1U server featuring  One UltraSPARC T2 multicore processor with 4 cores (32 threads); 1.2 GHz or  8 cores (64 threads); 1.2, 1.4, or 1.6 GHz. It provides high levels of system uptime through the processor and memory reliability-availability-serviceability (RAS) features, coupled with the redundancy of some systems components, support for hardware RAID (0+1), and the predictive self-healing features of the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (Solaris OS). The UltraSPARC T2 processor improves throughput while using less power and dissipating less heat than conventional processor designs.
Additional processor components, such as L1 cache, L2 cache, memory access crossbar, memory controllers, and the I/O interface have been carefully tuned for optimal performance.

The Sun Sparc Enterprise T5120 server offers investment protection with SPARC V9 binary application compatibility and the Solaris 10 OS. The Solaris 10 OS also provides features such as Solaris Predictive Self-Healing, Solaris Dynamic Tracing, and support across UltraSPARC platforms.

Unified server management through the use of the Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) system controller interface. ILOM integrates and manages CoolThreads and x64 platforms with the same toolset, and in heterogeneous environments, using industry standard element management tools and enterprise frameworks.
Each of  Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 server provides an Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) service processor, compatible with Oracle’s x64 servers. Integrated Lights Out Manager provides a command-line interface (CLI), a Web-based graphical user interface (GUI), and Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) functionality to aid with out-of-band monitoring and administration.
